Drifting through the reeds
and slime of Deep-go Dyke, where the winds are always light and circular to boot. Though I'm not really a racer I took part in the Martham Boating Assoc. (the village club) passage race (circa two and a half hours). The opposition were mostly production cruisers. It was as I expected. We were over-handicapped and against the production boats we were first on both elapsed and corrected time against boats with lower Portsmouth handicaps. The Portsmouth Yardstick might work on a race round the cans in open water but in the rivers it's going to need a downward adjustment. The boat tacks much quicker than the cruisers and picks up way faster and with less leeway. Also the lack of a spinnaker is no handicap in the rivers where the twists and turns mean a kite is not much use. |
